Housing and spiritual support for those in need of care and the dying

In close coordination with Gyalwa Karmapa Thaye Dorje has that the International Karmapa Foundation in Germany/Thuringia has been developing a residential community on the outskirts of Möhra/Bad Salzungen since 2009. Here, people can live together in accordance with Buddhist teachings and ethics, practicing the values of mindfulness, awareness, compassion, and joy, regardless of age or social background. At the heart of this residential community is the  Karmapa Foundation House.

With the Karmapa Foundation House, the foundation has created living space that is used for communal activities in the area of mental and physical health, and has also designed premises that meet current standards for the care of those in need and for accompanying the dying.

During a private visit in July 2025, Gyalwa Karmapa emphasized that he found the residential project and its activities, and the Karmapa Foundation House in particular, to be very unique. In conversation, Gyalwa Karmapa confirmed that the two apartments on the ground floor were intended for the purpose of providing spiritual end-of-life care. Here, people would be able to receive spiritual support and assistance as they approach death.

Based on this desire, a group with the working title “Future Workshop Foundation House / Aging with Dignity” has been formed, which will now meet regularly to establish care structures and activate local networks. Furthermore, the group will regularly inform the Sangha about the topic of “Dying with Dignity in the Context of Dharma.”

In this context, we also have some good news: Last autumn, a course participant was so impressed by the idea of spiritual care support at the Karmapa Foundation House that she spontaneously sponsored a professional care bed.

Gyalwa Karmapa offered the following suggestions for the future of the housing project: for example, people with craft professions could settle there and/or health-promoting measures could be offered.
